This year, fashion has been all about silk, chiffon and drapery. The Armani Fall 2011 Haute Couture collection did more than just sample the culture and of Japan – it embraced them. Models walked tentatively in casual kimonos, with their hair elegantly wrapped in ornate ribbons. Japanese inspired prints seemed to float down the runway, seemingly have a life of their own. Giorgio Armani has always had a close connection with Japan, and it was apparent from his latest collection how much he was touched by the effects of the recent natural disasters.
One gown in particular, an orange strapless number with shimmering beads and a floral print at the bottom, seemed to embody Armani’s feelings. The brunette model with a striking bone structure seemed proud, humble and even honored to show off Armani’s key piece this year. Armani’s new collection also brought together a few trends that were only mentioned in passing previously. The cigarette pants are back, complete with matching fitted jackets. One armed jackets also made a guest appearance.
Overall, it seems that Armani was able to channel his sorrow and transform it into something very powerful. The bright color palette, exotic headpieces and delicate accessories helped to pull his collection together. The Armani Fall 2011 Haute Couture collection was all about accepting challenges and self expression. All of the Asian inspired prints were delicately layered together with more muted tones and accented by glitter, gold and beading. Instead of designing a funeral, Armani was able to create a celebration.
